In 1890,  Eugene Schieffelin,  a  German  immigrant,

released  40 pairs  of   European  Starlings  in  New

YorkÕs Central  Park.  To honour his new homeland

he had attempted to  release  every species of  bird

mentioned in the plays of Shakespeare. By 1959 the

birds reached the Pacific coast. In 2002 the Starling

population in North America exceeded  200  million.
